If you run a local business and you don't have a Google Business Profile, you're invisible to most of your potential customers. It's free, it takes 20 minutes to set up, and it's probably the single most impactful thing you can do for your online presence.

What Is a Google Business Profile?

It's that box that shows up on the right side of Google when someone searches your business name, or in the map results when someone searches "restaurants near me" or "barber shop in Rye NY." It shows your hours, address, phone number, reviews, photos, and a link to your website.

If you don't have one, you don't show up in those results. Your competitors do.

Why It Matters More Than Your Website

Here's the thing most business owners don't realize: for local searches, Google Business Profile results show up above regular website results. When someone searches "contractor near me" or "best pizza in White Plains," Google shows the map pack first. That's 3 businesses with their ratings, hours, and phone numbers right there.

If you're not in that map pack, most people will never scroll down far enough to find your website.

How to Set It Up

Go to business.google.com and follow the steps. You'll need your business name, address, phone number, and category. Google will verify you own the business, usually through a video or postcard. Once verified, fill out everything: hours, services, description, photos. The more complete your profile, the better you rank.

The Reviews Factor

Reviews are the biggest ranking factor for Google Business Profile. A business with 50 five-star reviews will almost always outrank a business with 3 reviews, even if that business has a better website. Ask every happy customer to leave a Google review. Make it easy by sending them a direct link.

Keep It Active

Google rewards businesses that post regularly to their profile. Share photos of your work, announce specials, post updates. It doesn't have to be complicated. Even one post a week signals to Google that your business is active and legitimate.
