Why Is My Website Not Showing Up on Google?
You built a website, it's live, but when you Google your business, nothing comes up. Or you're buried on page 5 where nobody will ever find you. This is one of the most common frustrations small business owners face. Here's what's actually going wrong and how to fix it.
1. Google Doesn't Know Your Site Exists
Google doesn't automatically find every website on the internet. It uses crawlers that follow links between sites. If no other website links to yours, and you haven't told Google about it directly, it might not even know you're there.
The fix: Go to Google Search Console, add your website, and submit your sitemap. This directly tells Google "here are all my pages, please index them." You should also submit your site URL through the URL Inspection tool and click "Request Indexing."
2. Your Site Is Too New
If your website launched recently, Google simply hasn't had enough time to crawl, index, and rank it. New domains have zero authority in Google's eyes. It takes time to build trust.
The fix: Be patient, but don't just wait. Actively build backlinks (get listed on directories, get your site linked from other websites), publish content regularly, and submit your sitemap. Most new sites start showing up within 1-4 weeks for their brand name, and 2-6 months for competitive keywords.
3. You Have No Backlinks
Backlinks are links from other websites pointing to yours. Google uses them as votes of confidence. If nobody links to your site, Google has no reason to trust it or rank it above competitors who do have backlinks.
The fix: List your business on Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook, LinkedIn, and industry directories. Ask clients to link to your site. If you have business partners, get them to add a link. Every backlink from a real website helps.
4. Your Pages Don't Target Any Keywords
If your homepage title is just "Home" and your pages don't mention what you do or where you're located, Google can't match you to relevant searches. You need to explicitly tell Google what each page is about.
The fix: Every page needs a unique title tag that includes your main keyword. For example, "Joe's Plumbing | Licensed Plumber in White Plains, NY" instead of just "Joe's Plumbing | Home." Include your service and location naturally throughout the page content too.
5. Your Site Is a Single Page
A one-page website can only rank for a handful of keywords. If you're a plumber who serves 5 cities and offers 8 services, a single page can't compete with a competitor who has 13 separate pages each targeting a specific keyword.

6. Your Site Is Slow or Not Mobile-Friendly
Google penalizes slow-loading websites and sites that don't work well on mobile devices. If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load or text is tiny and unreadable on a phone, you're hurting your rankings.
The fix: Test your site at PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev). Compress your images, remove unnecessary scripts, and make sure your layout adapts to mobile screens. A lightweight custom-coded site will always outperform a bloated WordPress site loaded with plugins.
7. You Have No Google Business Profile
For local businesses, the Google Business Profile is what shows you up in the map results. If you don't have one, you're invisible in the most valuable real estate on Google's search results page.

How Long Until I Show Up?
It depends on your competition and how aggressively you're building your online presence. For your brand name, usually 1-2 weeks. For competitive keywords like "plumber near me" or "web design Westchester," it could take 2-6 months of consistent effort. The key is doing everything on this list and staying consistent.
