How to Get More Google Reviews for Your Small Business
A business with 50 Google reviews at 4.8 stars will almost always beat a business with 3 reviews, even if that second business does better work. Reviews are the most important ranking factor for local search, and most small businesses don't have enough of them.
Why Reviews Matter So Much
Google uses reviews as a trust signal. More reviews (with high ratings) tell Google your business is legitimate, active, and well-liked. This directly affects whether you show up in the map pack when someone searches for your service in your area. Reviews also affect whether a customer actually clicks on your listing versus your competitor's. People read reviews before spending money. Period.
How to Ask (Without Being Awkward)
The number one reason businesses don't have reviews is they don't ask. Here's how to do it naturally:
- Ask right after a positive interaction. Customer says "thanks, that was great"? That's your window. "Glad to hear it. If you have a minute, a Google review would mean a lot to us."
- Send a follow-up text or email with a direct link to your Google review page. Not your website, not your Google listing, the actual review form. Make it one tap.
- Put a QR code at your counter that goes straight to the review form. Restaurants, barbershops, and salons do this well.
- Add the link to receipts and invoices. "Happy with our service? Leave us a review" with the direct link.
How to Get Your Direct Review Link
Search your business on Google. Click your Google Business Profile. Click "Ask for reviews" and Google gives you a shareable link. Save that link everywhere: your phone, your email signature, your website.
What NOT to Do
- Don't offer incentives. "Leave a review and get 10% off" violates Google's policies and can get your reviews removed.
- Don't buy fake reviews. Google's algorithm detects them and will penalize your listing.
- Don't ask only happy customers. A few 4-star reviews mixed in actually look more authentic than a wall of perfect 5s.
- Don't ignore negative reviews. Respond professionally. "We're sorry to hear that. Please reach out so we can make it right." Future customers read your responses.
Respond to Every Review
Google notices when businesses engage with their reviews. Thank every positive reviewer by name. Address every negative review calmly and professionally. This signals to Google that your business is active and attentive, which helps your rankings.
How Many Do You Need?
There's no magic number, but in most local markets, 20-30 reviews puts you in competitive territory. 50+ and you're ahead of most small businesses. The key is consistency. Don't get 20 reviews in one week and then nothing for 6 months. A steady stream of 2-3 per month looks natural and keeps your listing fresh.
